LONGER RUNTIMES, FASTER CHARGING AND COOLER BATTERIES WITH OUR TABLESS BATTERY TECHNOLOGY

This year, we introduced our innovative tabless battery technology into the 40VMax XGT range. The BL4040F is the first of our batteries to feature this cutting-edge technology, enabling more efficient power delivery and longer battery life whilst keeping heat generation to a minimum. Here we provide an overview of how the technology works and how it will help users get more out of their tools.

Tabbed batteries have been the standard for many years, and the design has proved very reliable. However, with the introduction of tools like cordless chainsaws and demolition hammers, the power output requirements of batteries has increased, and the limitations of this battery type have been exposed.

The primary issue with tabbed batteries in high-output scenarios comes from the bottleneck that is created by the thin metal strips, or tabs, that connect the anode and cathode to the terminal. When a large current is required to pass through this narrow contact point, resistance builds up, which can negatively impact the power delivery of the cell and its recharging speed, as well as cause the battery to heat up and potentially affect the length of its service life.

Tabless lithium-ion batteries work by eliminating this bottleneck. Batteries like the BL4040F have a design in which the end of the cathode and anode connect directly to the terminal. This allows the current to flow more easily, improving performance and the longevity of the cell.

As a result, the new 4.0 Ah BL4040F battery delivers the same 2.1kW maximum output as the 5.0 Ah BL4050F. This provides customers with the choice of the larger 5.0 Ah higher capacity battery or the smaller and lighter 4.0 Ah battery. Regardless of the choice you make, these high-output solutions will provide longer runtimes on higher drain tools like chainsaws, breakers and demolition hammers.

As with all of our XGT 40VMax batteries, the tabless BL4040F also features Makita’s digital communication system, which connects the tool to the battery to protect against overload, over-discharge and overheating. This feature, combined with a design that provides impact resistance, shock absorption and protection against dust ingress, provides longevity and continued performance.
