Environmental responsibility

Makita takes its environmental impact into account in all of its operations, particularly in the manufacture of its products. It does its utmost to minimise any environmental harm at every stage of its products’ life cycles, from the first production phases to delivery and use. The company’s goal is design products that are environmentally friendly and recyclable—products that fail to meet these requirements never enter production.

Product development

One of Makita’s main initiatives is the development of safer and more environmentally friendly batteries with longer service lives. The company took a decisive step in this direction years ago when it sought alternatives for nickel cadmium batteries that had been used as power sources for its rechargeable tools. It continuously strives to develop more sustainable and durable solutions for its entire product range, not just for the batteries.

 

Production

The production processes in all Makita factories are designed to protect the environment and to minimise the use of hazardous and harmful substances. Makita meets the strictest requirements set forth in the RoHS Directive (Restriction of Hazardous Substances), the EU regulation REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals) and the WEEE Directive (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment).

 

Recycling

Makita has implemented an efficient recycling programme to ensure the appropriate recycling of machines and batteries that have reached the end of their service lives and are returned to the company. Makita has undertaken to recycle any faulty devices and batteries delivered to it to ensure that all metal and plastic parts can be reused efficiently and environmental harm minimised.

Makita strives to act in an environmentally friendly manner in all of its operations in order to reduce its carbon footprint. Makita Corporation has undertaken to decrease carbon dioxide emissions from all its factories and offices across the world. The company has set up a committee to execute plans and monitor their implementation.
